'Atmanirbhar Bharat' Doesn't Care for Powerloom Sector?
The power loom sector is a significant industry, spread across many districts in Tamil Nadu. These industries have been hit hard by demonetisation, the inappropriate implementation of GST and the lockdown due to COVID-19. According to the Tamil Nadu Department of Handlooms and Textiles, there are nearly 3.2 lakh people who have been registered as power-loomers. The workers and small-scale manufacturers in the sector, who struggle to lead their lives, say that the government has ignored them.
