Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who’s trying his best to woo the voters, especially the Dalit community, in the election year, received another blow after the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) released matriculation and intermediate results on the basis of the students' castes.

The issue has sparked a controversy in the state. The opposition party, Congress and its newly appointed chief Kamal Nath, took a dig over the issue on Twitter. He said that by posting a copy of the caste-based result on Twitter, the BJP was out to divide the state on caste lines. Even Chouhan's school education minister, Deepak Joshi criticised this move and said that such data should not have been made public and demanded action against the wrongdoers. After writing their categories on the SC/ST candidates in Guna, the state government declared caste-based results of class Xth and XIIth.

On May 14, MPBSE declared the class Xth and XIIth results on caste basis at the Chief Minister Chouhan’s house in the state capital where he awarded the toppers.

As per the declared result of class Xth, of the 13,004 students belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) category, 6,669 passed, while 13,385 students out of 75,839 in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category, 30,166 students out of the 1,41,128 in the Other Backward Class (OBC) category and 84,559 out of 3,16,942 general category students have passed the board examination.

Similarly, according to the class XIIth result that was declared, 58,760 out of 92,669 SC students, 48,239 out of 78,438 ST students and 2,10,929 out of 3,03,388 OBC students and 86,943 general category students out of 1,25,261 have passed the examination this year.

Upon asking, the Minister of State for School Education, Deepak Joshi said, “The declaration of caste-based results in public is wrong and action would be taken against the persons found guilty.”

Responding to the Kamal Nath’s tweet, Joshi said, “The allegations levelled by Congress chief Kamal Nath is baseless and BJP has no intention to do so. It may have occurred due to a human error.”

When the controversial matter surfaced, Chairman of MPBSE SR Mohanti, appeared to be in a damage-control mode. “The cast-based result released by the board is not to divide students but to pass on state government welfare schemes. Board categorises students from different categories and shortlists them to give welfare schemes like laptop distribution scheme, meritorious student scheme,” he said.

Replying to the question of school education Minister’s comment over the issue, Mohanti added, “The minister has been misinformed. There is no such date that has been released by the board but when media persons asked a question on declaring caste-based result he gave his statement.”

Incidentally, this is not the first time when the MP Board has declared the caste-based results, it has been doing this since 2016. But this is the first time that the matter has been noticed. The school education minister, Joshi, was quite oblivious to the fact that the board had repeated the same thing in 2016 and 2017.
