22 million Indians have quit the workforce in the past five years, even though the working age population has increase by 121 million. Just 4 in 10 people who can work, want employment. And despite the drop in the labour force, unemployment among the youth has risen sharply. What even more worrying is that only one in 10 women are looking for paid work outside their home. It is a sign that years of unemployment has demoralised more than half of India’s working age population.
